Ruled Great Britain 11 June 1727 - 25 October 1760. George III assumed the throne as the first British-born monarch since Anne. His wife, Charlotte, gave birth to 15 children, of which only two died young. George III reigned for 60 years, but only a few years after his coronation he suffered his first attack of what is believed to be the chronic illness porphyria which causes mental confusion. He suffered periodically from this ailment for the rest of his life. He is best known as the monarch on the throne when the United States fought for and gained its independence from Britain. |
